The City of Stonnington (Council) engaged Tonkin + Taylor (T+T) to conduct a feasibility study and develop a business case to upgrade the Stonnington Waste Transfer Station. The business case examined circular economy and resource recovery opportunities to futureproof the transfer station against current and future waste industry changes, and ensure that the centre can continue to meet the community’s needs.
The site is located immediately adjacent to the Council depot with some shared facilities, meaning that transfer station’s current operations and use were important considerations in any proposed changes. Site constraints provided particular challenges, requiring T + T to creatively solve and identify opportunities to meet Council’s objectives.
T+T worked with Council to identify operational and infrastructure improvements to enable local recycling of not only current items, but also the potential to introduce separation and recycling of new materials.
A key part of T+T’s activity on the waste transfer station project was developing several concepts reflecting different available space and capital budgets. The range of concepts ranged from low costs minor works, to large scale infrastructure development and capital.
