The Auckland Material Recovery Facility (MRF) was a joint-venture project between Auckland Council and Visy Recycling (NZ) Ltd. The MRF now handles recycling collected from Council’s 265,000 households – catering for over 770,000 people or approximately 20 per cent of New Zealand’s population.
It is one of the southern hemisphere’s most technologically advanced MRF facilities. This flagship facility is on 3.6 ha of the former Galway Street closed landfill in Onehunga, Auckland. This construction location presented aggressive and potentially unstable ground conditions and was actively producing methane gas. In addition, it is adjacent to the Manukau Harbour – a sensitive, ecologically valuable water body.
It has received praise from local and central government for its design and delivery.
