Auckland’s $NZ 1.4billion Waterview Connection was the largest and most ambitious motorway project ever undertaken in New Zealand.
Tonkin + Taylor was a Non-Owner Participant (NOP) of the Well Connected Alliance (WCA) that delivered the project.
The Waterview Connection involved the construction of twin tunnels using the largest tunnel boring machine in the Southern Hemisphere, 5km of multi-lane motorway, four major motorway interchange viaducts, motorway bridges and multiple retention structures.
The project is located in the centre of suburban Auckland, with the tunnel alignment passing under rail links and commercial and residential buildings.
T+T provided a range of consulting services – the most significant being design expertise across key aspects of the project – including engineering geology, geotechnical, civil, hydrology, stormwater, design management, ecology, environmental management, and construction observation. Pou whenua were erected at the entrance to the bridge and carved by local Māori artists, representing Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
